I will never forget when I aspired to become Captain of Abeokuta Golf Club. The contest was daunting. The establishment was formidable and the odds were clearly against me. Many who believed privately could not summon courage publicly. But you stood up boldly for me. You put your name, influence and goodwill on the line. You spoke when risky to speak, you stood when easier to sit, and you fought alongside me with dignity. Against all odds, by God's grace and your steadfast support, I won and became Captain. That victory remains a testament to true loyalty. As you celebrate this Diamond Jubilee, I pray Almighty God grants you many more years in sound health, wisdom and peace. A Tribute to Justice Demola Ahmed Bakre at 60 Today I celebrate a man who has been far more than a first cousin to me. Justice Demola Ahmed Bakre has been my brother, my friend and my steady anchor for almost four decades. Our bond took shape in 1986, when I lived with him in Ijebu Igbo during my pre-degree course. He welcomed me so warmly and made life so easy that the town felt like home almost at once. When the time came to move to Ago Iwoye, where my faculty was, I found it genuinely hard to leave. From those early days I was drawn to him: his love of music, his effortless style and his quick, delightful wit. Over the years I came to know the deeper qualities beneath that charm, a kind heart, a thoughtful mind and a loyalty that never wavers. He has been a pillar of support throughout my life, never more so than when we lost my immediate elder brother, Kabiyesi. In that season of grief, Egbon stepped into a void no one else could fill. He gave me strength when I needed it most, and I will carry that gratitude with me always. Today, I honour him as a man of rare grace, wisdom and integrity, someone I respect deeply and have always looked up to. I met Tunde when he was first assigned to our court here in Antigua. We became firm friends-sharing judgments, authorities and experiences. On a lighter side we also shared a love of reggae music attending shows and live music events. When he decided to take up the position in Turks and Caicos I was happy and yet sad, as I no longer had my friend nearby. I am sorry that I will not be able to make the birthday celebrations but he knows my thoughts and prayers remain with him. Happy Birthday M'lord and as we say in Jamaica "walk good"!!

As a young confused lawyer, I went to one court in Abuja in 2007, jittery & battling to perfect what I had rehearsed to say to the court when its my turn. Just before mine, one other case was called. The parties were familiar Benue names, so it caught my attention. But then there was this very brilliant & extremely convincing presentation made by this confident, calm, yet assertive lawyer. I became very interested in knowing who he was. So after my case, having missed my rehearsed lines, i summoned my last courage & went to him & he gently guided me on how to approach the issues i missed. I was so grateful. That was how, from that day, My Lord Hon. Justice Bakre became my mentor. He eventually employed me in his firm; Law Office of Demola Bakre, where I did my pupillage for about 5years. While working with him, he took me in as his own. He drilled me properly (although he could shout sha, ye!!!). But he taught me drafting, presentation, decorum, composure, diligence, hard work, dedication, commitment, how & when to charge clients. He taught me integrity. He bought me my first car & gave me as a surprise gift, even when I had barely worked with him for 6 months. Today, I give glory to God for causing our paths to cross. And I thank God for my journey & the heights He is taking us to. But I have always said that apart from God Almighty & my parents, I owe my all to Mi Lord, Hon. Justice Demola Bakre. Our friendship predates our appointments to the Bench, beginning during our early years at Ayanlaja Adesanya’s law firm. It is also rooted in family ties. My Lord’s family was closely connected with that of my uncle, Chief E. V. O. Koleoso, and my husband’s uncle, Prince Odunbanjo, known as Babu Wahala. My husband often recalled the memorable times shared by Justice Bakre Senior, who remains strong today, Chief Koleoso and Prince Odunbanjo, both of blessed memory. When I was appointed a Judge of the High Court of Ogun State, My Lord helped me navigate the unfamiliar terrain. With patience and concern, he helped me find my bearings. Though now far away, his support has never diminished. His life and career inspire me. Despite all he has attained, he remains humble, approachable and generous. He wears his accomplishments lightly and freely shares his knowledge, influence and opportunities so that others may succeed. My Lord also encouraged my newfound interest in golf and introduced me to Coach Ijagba, who now trains me. I look forward to enjoying a few rounds with him, although I still have far to go before offering serious competition. May the grace that distinguishes his life continue to speak for him. I first encountered Justice Bakre not as a friend but as counsel before his bench. It was there, in that formal distance, that I came to understand the measure of the man. What I valued most was this: our friendship outside the courtroom never followed us inside it. If anything he held me to a higher standard when I appeared before him. Sharper questions. Less latitude. No quarter given because we knew each other. I call that integrity. Every case I won in his court I won because the law and facts were on my side, not because friendship tipped the scale. That is rare to say of any judge, and rarer still to be grateful for the strictness that made it possible. Justice Bakre understood that impartiality is not the absence of relationships but the discipline to set them aside the moment you take your seat. He drew that line without apology and never let me forget where it was. He taught me, not through lecture but through example, what it means for a lawyer to earn a judgment rather than receive one. You gave our profession something increasingly hard to find: a bench moved only by law and facts, never by sentiment, status, or power. I have actually heard about Mi Lord Demola Bakre Jnr. for quite a long time, even before I met him, because he used to be a colleague of my dad. My first personal encounter with him was on the golf course at Abeokuta Golf Club. We had the opportunity to play a round together, and that was when I got to see firsthand just how passionate he is about the game. 😂 Whenever he misses a shot, you can hear him express his frustration so loudly that even people on other parts of the course can almost feel his pain! That, for me, is part of what makes him so interesting and memorable. Beyond golf, Mi Lord Demola is a down-to-earth big brother and uncle—easygoing, straightforward, approachable, and genuinely himself. He is the kind of person you can relate with easily, and once you get to know him, you understand why people enjoy having him around…. Sixty Years of Grace, Service and Gentlemanly Excellence Some birthdays are milestones; others celebrate a life that has touched many. Justice Demola Bakre’s 60th is certainly the latter. I first met His Lordship in 2017 at a golf competition organised by Different Strokes in Abeokuta. I found it refreshing to meet a serving judge who was warm, approachable and without airs. I also had the privilege of meeting his father, a retired Judge of the High Court of Ogun State—a memorable introduction to a distinguished heritage. From the High Court of Ogun State to the High Court of The Gambia, and now the Supreme Court of the Turks and Caicos Islands, His Lordship’s judicial journey reflects service and distinction. Yet beyond the robes and titles is simply Demola—a people person, a humble and accessible gentleman who has built friendships across generations and borders. And then there is the golfer! His Lordship is a gentleman golfer. Golf reflects his qualities: patience, honesty, discipline and fellowship. He plays with dignity and humour. We also celebrate his beloved wife. Madam, thank you for your love, devotion and warmth to our family, especially the care you have shown Bimbo, my wife. We remain grateful. … and one of my dearest friends. He became someone I could call at any time, someone with whom I could share my deepest concerns, and someone who always knew how to replace worry with laughter. Behind his firm exterior lies one of the kindest, most compassionate souls I have ever known. He genuinely cares for people and goes out of his way to make others better. …hoped for a transfer to another jurisdiction. Sadly, for me—or rather, wonderfully for me—that transfer never came. Looking back now, I realise that God places certain people in our lives for a purpose, even when we cannot see it at the time. Then came 2021. I was shortlisted for elevation to the High Court Bench and invited for my interview. Curious, I asked who would be on the interview panel. The answer nearly finished me. "My Lord Justice Demola Bakre is one of the panellists." At that very moment, I silently concluded that my judicial dream had come to an end before the interview had even begun. I walked into the room, and to my surprise, I was seated directly opposite the very man I had spent months trying to avoid. The interview ended. Then something happened that completely changed my perception of him. Instead of criticism, My Lord spoke words of encouragement that instilled confidence in me, shaped my outlook, and influenced the judge I strive to be today. As if that was not enough, he personally bought me my very first collarette as a judge—a gift I will treasure forever. From then on, everything changed. I found myself regularly sitting in his courtroom, observing proceedings, seeking his guidance, and learning from his remarkable wisdom. He never turned me away. He mentored me, encouraged me, challenged me, and believed in me. Somewhere along that journey, the judge I once feared became my trusted colleague, my confidant, my brother…

Some people enter your life quietly. Others arrive like a thunderstorm, leaving you wondering whether to run for cover or stand your ground. My Lord Justice Demola Bakre belongs firmly to the second category. One afternoon in late 2020, while I was serving as Principal Magistrate in Banjul, I was peacefully buried in my case files when My Lord's driver appeared at my office door. "Your car is blocking My Lord's vehicle," he said, "and he wants to leave." Blocking a judge's car? I nearly had a heart attack. I sprang from my chair and rushed downstairs to move my vehicle. What I did not know was that My Lord was already seated in his car, patiently—or perhaps impatiently—waiting. As I hurried past without noticing him, I suddenly heard a commanding voice: "Come here! How can you pass without apologising?" I froze. I stammered. I attempted to explain that I had not realised he was sitting in the car. Unfortunately, My Lord has never been famous for patiently waiting for explanations! Before I could finish my sentence, I received a memorable lecture right there in the car park. Embarrassed beyond words, I simply bowed, apologised and accepted my fate, as the ethics of our noble profession required. From that day, I resolved that the safest way to preserve my peace was to avoid Justice Bakre at all costs. I avoided him as though he were an examination I had not prepared for. In fact, I secretly hope…

MiLord is an outstanding character. When he loves, he loves—and I say so as a proud member of his Different Strokes Kitty Group family.My original plan was simply to play the golf game, but MiLord did what he does best: he completely turned the tables. He kidnapped me, reined me in, and welcomed me into his world. He held my hand and showed me that golf stretches far beyond hitting a tiny white ball all over the fairway. A few years ago, I ran into a challenge in one of my pursuits. I called Demola to discuss it, and without a second thought, he provided a solution. My wife and I will forever be grateful to him. He is genuinely a good person.

What shall I say unto the Allah, all I have to say is thank thee Allah. We have come a long way and have passed through so many rough parts and tortuous roads, which we never knew as actually rough, because we did not know better but in retrospect, we can conclude it was actually rough and tough, our travails and our growing up from boys to men. It’s nice been a family PS I still keep those papers and other stuff you left in my care some years back. I need your permission to burn them, now that you are 60, I am sure and definite there will never be need for it again, NEVER, brother mi. Bremm

There are some people who come into our lives in childhood and, somehow, remain a constant throughout life. We may drift apart for years at a time, but whenever we found our way back to each other, the friendship was still there; familiar and effortless, as though no time had passed at all. Ironically, while Demola had the darkest complexion among us, he was always the one who seemed to bring the most light into the room. His warmth, laughter and ever-smiling face had a way of making everyone around him feel at ease and valued. I am so proud of the man you have become and deeply grateful to God for seeing you through 60 years of grace, mercy and favour. Thunder, Fire, and Friendship Justice Ademola Tunde Bakre was the pioneer Chairman of the NLS Class of ’93, and I served under him as the PRO. From the very beginning, ours was a relationship forged in strong wills, sharp minds, and more than a few head‑butting sessions. He stood his ground, I stood mine, and somehow, in the middle of all that fire, respect found a home. I call him Thunder without the noise: a man whose authority doesn’t need volume, whose presence commands attention even in silence. When I later ran for the Chairman/President position after his tenure, I’m almost certain he didn’t support me — but I never held it against him. After I won, he became very supportive. To be fair, I didn’t give him any breathing space to be otherwise 😂. Destiny tied us together, and we became friends for life, by fire by force. As he celebrates 60, I honor the strength, discipline, and quiet brilliance that define him. May God bless him with long life, clarity, and continued distinction.
